From Hermit Crab to Open Door (Part 1) | A Practical and Biblical Guide for Building Community | in case i forget
We are taking a break from Hebrews for a few weeks while I do some deeper research for chapter three. And y'all, this episode that I am coming back with in the meantime might be one of the most practically useful episodes I have recorded yet.
We are talking about community. Real community. Not the three-minute meet and greet at church, not the group chat that goes quiet, not the networking event where everyone is just selling themselves. Real, intentional, genuine connection with other women, and why it is so hard to find as an adult especially when you are in a season of transition.
I am also being honest about my own hermit crab season. Eighteen months postpartum, full-time homeschooling, new state, new church, new everything, and having to work myself back into being the kind of woman who actually reaches out and connects with people. I am in the middle of this too.

Hebrews 2:14-17 | Jesus Became Like You So He Could Walk in Your Shoes | in case i forget
We are wrapping up Hebrews chapter two today and y'all, this one got personal. We are in verses 14 through 17 and we are talking about why Jesus had to take on flesh and blood, what it means that He destroyed the one who has the power of death, and why you no longer have to be a slave to the fear of death.
I am also sharing something I have not talked about on the podcast before: the postpartum anxiety I experienced after the birth of my son and the very real, very heavy fear of death that came with it. And somehow, in the middle of all of that, Gandalf from the Lord of the Rings said something that tied it all together.

Hebrews 2:10-13 | Jesus Is the Founder of Our Salvation and He Is Not Ashamed to Call You Sister | in case i forget
We are back in Hebrews chapter 2 and this one has been sitting with me for a while. We are in verses 10 through 13 today, and y'all, there is so much packed into just these three verses that I could not rush through them.
We are talking about what it means that Jesus is the founder of our salvation, why God saw it as fitting for Him to be made perfect through suffering, and what the ancient Greek word behind that phrase actually means. We are also talking about the most quietly powerful line in this entire passage: He is not ashamed to call you sister.
Before we get into the study I am also sharing a real conversation I had with a messianic Jew at a birthday party two Saturdays ago and why having been deep in the book of Hebrews for five months is what gave me the theological grounding to navigate it. This is exactly why we study.

We are back in Hebrews chapter 2 picking up right where we left off — and this passage is still swinging. Today we are finishing verse 3 and working through verse 4, and what we find here is both a warning and an invitation. The warning: do not neglect this great salvation. The invitation: look at the evidence God has given you that it is real — the signs, the wonders, the miracles, the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and 2,000 years of a gospel that has only grown stronger. That is not coincidence. That is God bearing witness.
Shorter episode today — and that is okay. We are not rushing through Hebrews. We are sitting in it.

QUICK RECAP FROM LAST WEEK(Episode 4 — Hebrews 2:1-3a)
Last week we covered the first half of this passage and focused on the word drift — that quiet, accidental, unintentional movement away from the dock that happens when we are not paying much closer attention. We talked about what it means to be anchored versus what it means to drift, and how the same waves of everyday life that should be manageable can pull us miles from where we were supposed to be if we are not holding fast to Jesus Christ.

THE PASSAGE
Hebrews 2:1-4 ESV
"Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will."
UNPACKING THE PASSAGE
"How shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?" — Hebrews 2:3
We picked up here from last week. Under the old covenant there was an entire system of holiness that the people of Israel had to maintain — laws to keep, a sacrificial system, daily and annual offerings made on behalf of the people to atone for sin. All of this was the process by which they sought right standing before God.
And even then — it was never fully enough. The law was not given to justify us. As we will see later in Hebrews 11, even those under the law were declared righteous because of their faith — not their works. The law revealed the standard. It also revealed that we could never meet it.
"Jesus did all of the work that we would have had to do in order to be made right — and even then it would not have sufficed because we were not enough to actually satiate the wrath of God."
But here in the new covenant — Jesus lived the life we could not live. He died the death we should have died. He suffered the sufferings we should have suffered. And we have been given a great salvation. We get to share in the inheritance without having to do anything but place our faith in Jesus Christ and do as He commanded — love God with our whole heart, mind, soul, and strength, and love others as ourselves. In this, all the other laws are fulfilled.
So the author's question is not a rhetorical trap. It is a genuine warning anchored in love: if you have been given something this extraordinary — something that the Israelites under the old covenant never had — how could you possibly neglect it? And if you neglect it, how shall you escape the consequences of that drift?
"It was declared at first by the Lord, and attested to us by those who heard." — Hebrews 2:3b
This phrase is also one of the reasons scholars have a hard time attributing Hebrews to Paul. Paul never shied away from declaring that his gospel was received directly from Jesus Himself — that direct discipleship was the very thing that made him an apostle. But here the author places himself among those who received the message secondhand — attested to us by those who heard. That language suggests he was not one of the original hearers. Another quiet clue that the authorship question remains open until we get to heaven.
What matters theologically is this: the word we have was declared first by the Lord. Then it was attested — confirmed and verified — by the people who were there. The disciples. The early church. The ones who saw what Jesus did and refused to stop talking about it even under threat of arrest and death.
"How many times did the disciples ask Jesus, 'To whom shall we go if we leave?' There were a lot of things that Jesus did that might've been confusing — he spoke with such authority, such eloquence, in parables where some people left— and yet the disciples stayed."
The word has a witness trail. First the Lord declared it. Then eyewitnesses attested it. Then God confirmed it.
"God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will." — Hebrews 2:4
Three layers of confirmation — and they build on each other:
Layer 1 — The Signs and Wonders of JesusEvery miracle Jesus performed was God bearing witness to His own Son. When Jesus healed the paralyzed man lowered through the ceiling by his friends — He did something only God could do. He first said "Your sins are forgiven" — something the Pharisees immediately recognized as a claim only God could make. And then, knowing what they were thinking in their hearts, He said: "But so that you know that God is the one who sent me" — and told the man to pick up his mat and walk.
The people did not worship Jesus in that moment. They lifted their hands to heaven and gave God praise. And that is exactly the point — the signs and wonders of Jesus were not just impressive. They were God the Father bearing witness to God the Son.
Layer 2 — The Gifts of the Holy SpiritAfter the resurrection and ascension, God continued to bear witness through the gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed to the early church. Pentecost. Three thousand people coming to Christ in a single day after Peter preaches under the anointing of the Spirit. Signs and wonders continuing through the apostles in the book of Acts.
Layer 3 — 2,000 Years of a Gospel That Has Only Grown StrongerThere is a moment in Acts — a Pharisee addressing the council that is trying to figure out how to stop the disciples — who essentially says: if we arrest or kill them and God is not behind this, their followers will scatter just like all the others before them. But if God is behind this, we do not want to find ourselves standing against God.
He was, unknowingly, prophesying.
"We are now 2,000 years post all of that. And what can we see about Christianity? What can we see about the gospel message of Jesus Christ? It has not only grown stronger in number, but it's grown stronger in strength. That alone attests to God."
No human movement survives 2,000 years of persecution, cultural opposition, and attempted suppression and emerges stronger. That is not strategy. That is the Holy Spirit.
THE CLOSING WORD
"The waves will come — and that's just the fact of life. The waves will come and sometimes the water ripples just right where it would cause the boat to drift. So if you are anchored, hold fast to the hem of Jesus Christ. If you're holding on by a thread — make sure that thread is fastened tightly to the hem of Jesus Christ's robe."

3 THINGS TO WALK AWAY WITH
1. You have been given something the Israelites never had.The old covenant required a system of law and sacrifice that could never fully satisfy. Jesus fulfilled it completely. You wear His righteousness. You share in His inheritance. That is the great salvation — and it is too extraordinary to neglect.
2. God did not just declare the gospel — He confirmed it.Signs and wonders. Miracles. The gifts of the Holy Spirit. The early church. Three thousand converts in one day. Two thousand years of a gospel that has only grown stronger. God has been bearing witness all along. The evidence is overwhelming.
3. Holding on by a thread is still holding on — just make sure the thread is tied to Jesus.Some seasons that is all we have. And that is okay. Just make sure the thread is fastened to the hem of His robe. An anchor does not require strength from the boat. It just requires connection to something that holds.
 
APPLICATION FOR ANCHORED WIVES AND MOMS
You have been given a great salvation. Not a set of rules to keep perfectly. Not a system to maintain. A Person to hold onto. And on the days when it feels like you are barely holding on — remember that the same God who bore witness through signs and wonders in the first century is the same God who is bearing witness in your life right now. The signs and wonders in your own story are Ebenezers. Do not forget them. Write them down. Send them in a letter to a sister who needs to remember too.

Series: A Study Through the Book of Hebrews | Episode 4
 
We are back in Hebrews and picking up in chapter 2, and y'all, this passage hit different after the last few weeks. Life has been hard and honestly this study came at exactly the right time. We are only covering verses 1 through 3 today, but there is so much in just these three verses that we cannot rush past it. We are talking about one of the most quietly dangerous things that can happen to a Christian woman in a full season: drifting. Not rebellion. Not walking away on purpose. Just . . . drifting. Subtly. Accidentally. Until you look up and you are miles from where you were supposed to be.

Before we can understand the word therefore that opens chapter 2, we have to remember what came before it. Hebrews chapter 1 established:
In the past God spoke through the prophets, but now He speaks through His Son
Jesus is the radiance of God's glory and the exact imprint of His nature
He upholds the universe by the word of His power
He made purification for sins and sat down at the right hand of the Father because the work is finished
He is much superior to the angels.  He is not an angel, He is God
He is the begotten Son of God sharing the exact same nature as the Father
He is the heir of all things and the firstborn of many brothers and sisters
All of that is what the word therefore in chapter 2 verse 1 is pointing back to.
 
THE PASSAGE
Hebrews 2:1-3 ESV
"Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will."
 
UNPACKING THE PASSAGE
The Word "Therefore"
Hebrews is not a collection of standalone chapters. It is a continuous letter, one flowing argument from beginning to end. We have divided it into chapters and verses to make it accessible, but the original readers experienced it as one uninterrupted piece of writing.
So when chapter 2 opens with therefore, that word is a hinge. Everything said in chapter 1 is being gathered up and carried forward into a new point. The author is essentially saying: given everything I just told you about who Jesus is, here is what that means for how you live.
And what does it mean? Pay much closer attention.
"We must pay much closer attention to what we have heard lest we drift away from it." Hebrews 2:1
That word drift is the word we have to sit with.
In the ancient Greek, the word used here carries the idea of slipping away, παραρρέω (pararrheo), the way something slides out of your hand, or the way a boat that was docked begins to move away from the shore. Not because someone pushed it. Not because there was a storm. Just because nothing was holding it in place and the natural movement of the water did what water does.
According to the commentary by David Guzik of Enduring Word (written in 1996),  this drifting is something that happens without us realizing it. That is what makes it so dangerous.
Drifting is the opposite of intention.
It does not happen on purpose. It does not announce itself. It happens in the in-between. . . when you are taking care of your kids and running your home . . . showing up at work and managing your marriage. By the time you come up for air you realize that somewhere in all of that the Word got quiet and God felt far and you cannot quite remember the last time you were actually anchored.
That is drifting. And the author of Hebrews is warning us: If you are not paying much closer attention to what you have heard, this is what happens. Not rebellion. Not walking away. Just slipping. Quietly. Gradually. Until you look back and you are miles from where you were.
The opposite of drift is anchor.
An anchored boat does not drift because something is holding it in place even when the currents come. Even when the waves come. Even when the normal rippling of the water would otherwise move it.
We need an anchor. And our anchor is Jesus Christ.
How do we stay anchored?
This is not just a theological statement. It is practical:
Get into the Word, practice the Word, not just hear it, and stay there. Not just hearing it. James 1 tells us we are called to be doers of the Word. . . not just hearers. A boat does not get anchored by being near the anchor. It gets anchored by being attached to it.
Meditate on what you have heard. Just three days before recording this episode I was listening to Matthew 6 five times back to back because I needed it to settle. Not just land on the surface of my heart but actually go down into it. That is what it can look like to pay much closer attention.
Stay in community. One of the things that keeps us from drifting is being surrounded by other women who are paying attention too. When one of us starts to drift, another one notices. That is part of why the seven letters club exists . . . real community that shows up in your mailbox and keeps you tethered.

There is a widely held belief among scholars that this verse is referring to the Mosaic Law - the law given to Moses on the mountain - and that angels played a role in delivering or accompanying that message. We see this referenced in:
Acts 7:53 — "You who received the law as delivered by angels and did not keep it"
Deuteronomy 33:2 — a passage that seems to allude to angelic presence at the giving of the law
Here is the point that the author of Hebrews is making: the law, delivered through angels, through prophets, through the old covenant system  proved reliable. Every single transgression received a just consequence. God meant what He said. He required holiness. And He enforced it.
If you have ever read Leviticus and thought this seems incredibly harsh, you are not alone. I felt the same thing on my first time through. But by the fourth attempt to read through Scripture cover to cover, it started to make sense: God is holy. Holiness demands holiness. And He is consistent. He does not change the standard. He does not show partiality.
Which is exactly what makes the next verse so staggering.
 
"How shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation?" Hebrews 2:3
If the old covenant, the law delivered through angels and prophets, demanded that level of accountability, what does neglecting the new covenant look like?
The old covenant required perfect obedience and met every violation with just retribution. We could never keep it. That is the whole point. The law was given so we could see our sin and so our hearts could break for it, but within our own power we could never satisfy it.
So God sent His Son.
Jesus lived the life we could not live. He died the death we should have died. He satisfied the wrath of God on our behalf. And as Ephesians 1 tells us through His sacrifice we get to wear His righteousness. When God looks at us He does not see us as we are. He sees us through Jesus. He puts on His Jesus glasses and looks at us through the filter of His Son.
That is the great salvation.
And the question the author asks is not a condemning one . . . it is a rhetorical warning: if you have been given this and you neglect it, drift from it, ignore it, let it get buried under the noise of your Tuesday, how shall you escape the consequences of that drift?
The answer is: you cannot.
This is not meant to terrify us. It is meant to anchor us. You have been given something extraordinary. Pay much closer attention to it. Do not let it drift to the background of your life. Because the God who required holiness under the old covenant has given you His Son under the new one, and that gift is too significant to neglect.
 
A PERSONAL WORD
The last six weeks have been genuinely hard. And I will tell you honestly, I have had to fight to stay anchored. Not because I stopped believing. But because when life gets heavy it is so easy to go from doer to just hearer. From anchored to slowly drifting.
What helped: sitting down to write the first letter for the seven letters club, before a single person had joined. The act of sitting down, picking up a pen, and writing with intention for someone else anchored me in a way I did not expect. I felt myself release things I had been carrying.
That is why this club exists. That is why this podcast exists. That is why Hebrews 2:1 matters so much à pay much closer attention, lest you drift. This is not just a warning. It is an invitation to stay.

3 THINGS TO WALK AWAY WITH
Drifting is not rebellion. It is distraction. You do not have to walk away from God to drift from Him. You just have to stop paying much closer attention. Life gets loud. The Word gets quiet. And before you know it you are miles from where you were supposed to be. The warning is not to terrify you . . . it is to anchor you.
The anchor is Jesus Christ and staying anchored is an action. Drifting is accidental. Anchoring is intentional. It happens in the Word. In prayer. In community. In the practice of what you have heard . . .not just the hearing of it. When life gets hard is exactly when you need to hold on tighter, not let go.
You have been given a great salvation . . . do not neglect it. Under the old covenant every transgression received a just retribution. Under the new covenant you get to wear the righteousness of Jesus. That is extraordinary. Too extraordinary to let drift to the background of your busy Tuesday. Pay much closer attention.
 
APPLICATION FOR ANCHORED WIVES AND MOMS
The seasons when life is the loudest are the seasons when the Word needs to be the loudest too. Not because reading your Bible will make the hard thing go away. But because staying anchored to Jesus is what keeps you from drifting so far that you cannot find your way back.
When the waves come, and they will, hold onto the anchor. Play Matthew 6 five times if you have to. Write a letter to a stranger. Open Hebrews. Do something that tethers you to what is true even when what you see in front of you is telling a different story.
You are an anchored woman. Live like it.

THE PASSAGE
Hebrews 1:1-14 ESV
"Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. For to which of the angels did God ever say, 'You are my Son, today I have begotten you'? Or again, 'I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son'? And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says, 'Let all God's angels worship him.' Of the angels he says, 'He makes his angels winds, and his ministers a flame of fire.' But of the Son he says, 'Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions.' And, 'You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands; they will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment, like a robe you will roll them up, like a garment they will be changed. But you are the same, and your years will have no end.' And to which of the angels has he ever said, 'Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet'? Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?"
UNPACKING THE PASSAGE
Verse 6 — "Let all God's angels worship him."
Every time in Scripture that someone attempts to worship an angel, the angel immediately redirects that worship back to God. We see this clearly in Revelation 19:10, where John falls at an angel's feet to worship and the angel says: "You must not do that. I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God."
Now hold that thought — because what Jesus does is the direct opposite.
In Luke 19, during the triumphal entry, the people are crying out, "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!" The Pharisees tell Jesus to rebuke His disciples. And Jesus responds: "I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out" (Luke 19:40).
He doesn't reject the worship. He receives it. And that matters more than we might initially realize. God is jealous for His glory. He does not share His worship. So for God to command the angels to worship His firstborn, and for Jesus to receive that worship without redirecting it — that tells us everything we need to know about who Jesus is.
A Note on Jesus Never Saying "I Am God"
Jesus never explicitly says word for word "I am God" in Scripture — and a lot of people use that as an argument against His deity. But what He does is actually so much more meaningful. He uses very specific language that the Jewish people — culturally rooted in the Torah, the synagogue, and centuries of prophetic expectation — would have understood immediately as a claim to be the Messiah, the Son of God.
When Jesus is in the synagogue in Nazareth and reads from Isaiah 61:1-3 — "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor..." — and then tells the congregation "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing" (Luke 4:16-21), He is making an unmistakable claim. Not the kind of claim that Roman emperors made when they called themselves gods. Something far more specific. Something that could only mean one thing to that particular people in that particular moment. And their reaction — "Is this not Joseph's son?" — tells us they understood exactly what He was saying.
Verse 7 — "He makes his angels winds and his ministers a flame of fire."
This is drawn from Psalm 104:4. The angels go where God directs them. They carry out His instructions. They serve at His command. Whatever their full role is here — and there's more to study — what's clear is that they are servants. Not the one on the throne.
Verses 8-9 — "Your throne, O God, is forever and ever."
Here the Father is addressing the Son directly and calling Him God. The throne is eternal. The scepter is one of uprightness and justice. And God the Father anoints the Son with the oil of gladness above all others. This is drawn from Psalm 45:6-7 and Isaiah 61:1 and 61:3 — passages written about the Messiah long before Jesus walked the earth.
Verses 10-12 — "They will perish, but you remain."
The heavens and the earth will wear out like a garment. They will be rolled up and changed. But Jesus — He remains. His years have no end. And not just that He won't end, but that He has no beginning. The angels have a beginning. Even the fallen angels, who will face an end, had a beginning. Jesus is eternal in both directions — before time, within time, and beyond it. That is what separates Him from every created being.
Verse 13 — "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool."
Never has this been said to any angel. Only to the Son. And what are those enemies? Death. Hell. The grave. Sin itself.
This connects directly to the temptation of Jesus in Matthew 4:8-9, where Satan takes Jesus to a high mountain, shows Him all the kingdoms of the world, and offers them to Him — if He will just bow down and worship. Here's what's easy to miss: Satan was offering Jesus a shortcut to His inheritance. He was saying, you don't have to go to the cross. Just worship me and I'll hand it all over.
But Psalm 2:7-8 tells us the inheritance was always going to come through the mission — through the cross, the resurrection, and the conquest of death, hell, and the grave. Satan wasn't offering Jesus something he couldn't have. He was offering him a way around what it would cost to get it.
Jesus' response? "Be gone, Satan, for it is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve'" (Matthew 4:10).
He knew the mission. He stayed on it. And Philippians 2:5-11 tells us why:
"Who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself by taking the form of a servant... he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow..."
He accomplished the mission. He made His enemies His footstool. Death, hell, and the grave — conquered. The nations — redeemed.
Verse 14 — "Are they not all ministering spirits sent out to serve?"
So what are the angels for? They are ministering spirits — sent out to serve those who are to inherit salvation. That includes you. Psalm 34:7 tells us the angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him and watches over them. They protect us. They minister to us. They fight for us. They are not God, but they are very much at work on our behalf — according to the will and direction of God.
3 THINGS TO WALK AWAY WITH
1. Jesus receives worship — and that is the point.Angels redirect worship. Jesus receives it. God does not share His glory, which means when He commands the angels to worship His Son, He is declaring exactly who His Son is.
2. Jesus is eternal in both directions.It's not just that He will never end — it's that He never began. The heavens and earth will pass away. He will remain. That is what separates Him from every angel and every created thing.

You are not fighting your battles alone. The same God who commands angels to worship His Son has those same angels sent out to minister to you — a daughter who is inheriting salvation.
